Clive Rushton has an extensive background in coaching, coach education and scientific monitoring of swimmers. Having published many articles, he is recognised as an authority on coaching methodology, performance planning and interpretation of scientific data, particularly lactate analysis, for coaches. His ground-breaking publication, ‘The Effect of Biomechanics on Physiology’ introduced a unique approach to swimmer monitoring during training and has been described as ‘the ultimate cheat sheet’ for coaches.
Clive has worked in many countries across the world and brings all of his experience of multi-cultural programmes to swimformation. During his seven-year project as High Performance Director for Swimming New Zealand the country of 4 million people saw a spectacular increase in performance standards, including more medals than all other NZ sports combined at the 2005 World University Games, the most medals of any NZ sport at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the first ever NZ individual world champion, and a bronze relay medal in Commonwealth record time, at the 2008 World 25m Championships, the first ever NZ relay team into an Olympic final in Beijing (5th) and first place on the male medal table at the 2008 Fina World Junior Championships - this against the likes of USA, AUS, GBR, RUS etc.
Clive captained the Great Britain team at the 1972 Olympic Games and later, as a coach, personally developed and was involved with over 200 international and world-ranked swimmers. His clubs won senior and age-group national team titles and he was the coach of successful international teams from 1975 onwards.
Clive trained as a Physical Education teacher at Keele University (Madeley College) in England. He holds the highest swimming coaching qualifications of the English A.S.A. and is a registered coach education tutor. He has made presentations on testing and other coaching-related subjects to Olympic Solidarity seminars, FINA World Medical Congress and Coaching Conferences worldwide.
Among many other international appointments, Clive has been appointed as Head Coach, Coach or Team Manager to European Junior Championships, Pan-Pacific Championships, European Championships and World Championships, World University Games, Mediterranean Games, Commonwealth Games, and Olympic Games.
